New Zealand > Waikato
> Huntly
By Jessica Lloyd
This small coal-mining town 30km north of Hamilton is home to New Zealand’s
biggest coal-fired power station (unsurprisingly!). This small town is split
up the middle by the Waikato River. There are open cast mines about 6km
away, and underground mines a small distance away. The coal is mostly used
to feed the power station. Lake Hakanoa is the main outdoor recreation area,
with sports facilities and a boat club. There is also a shopping centre.
Things to do in Huntly
Okowhao Reserve is quite scenic, and if you are into plants, there are a
couple of rarities here. There are a number of bush walks, with some kauri
trees on the way. The Bush Tramway Club has stream train rides. Apart from
that, there is very little else to do in Huntly. Most people drive to
Hamilton if they want to do something like go to the movies or go out.
