The Friendly
City
Invercargill is New Zealands southernmost city
and the commercial heart of Southland. It is Southlands major
service centre and transport hub the airport
links travellers with other main centers within hours
and trains and buses depart nationwide daily.
Invercargill is
Southlands only city. From here, you can
take the short journey across Foveaux Straight to
Stewart Island. The city of Invercargill offers
a display of fine Victorian architecture and has all
the amenities and services that any traveller may
require. The wonderful Southland Museum and Art
Gallery has a live Tuatara display. A stay in
Invercargill enables you to meet the local residents
and discover the warmth of southern
hospitality.
The city offers an
excellent range of shops, a focused business
district, lively café/bars and restaurants and late
night entertainment. The inner city upgrade has
transformed the city centre into a modern, attractive
and vibrant heart of the city. The variety and number
of heritage buildings in the city centre add to
Invercargills character.
Invercargill is
also well known for the Southland Museum and Art
Gallery (encased in the largest pyramid in the
Southern hemisphere) and chief among the attractions
there are the live tuatara.
Other displays include three exhibition galleries and
the Beyond the Roaring 40s Gallery.
Queens
Park is an 80-hectare park in the centre of the city,
which offers a range of facilities including one of
Invercargills four 18-hole golf courses.
Another well-known park is only a short drive from
the city centre and includes the Anderson Park Art
Gallery where a wonderful collection of New Zealand
Art can be found.
Invercargill is known far and wide for its
hospitality to visitors and is the gateway to some of
New Zealands most beautiful scenery, including
Stewart Island, Fiordland and the Catlins.

The
New Zealand Gold Guitar Awards

Held at various
venues in Gore
New Zealands premier country music
festival. The New Zealand Gold Guitar Awards
are for
amateur singers and many professional careers have
been launched at these prestigious awards. The
ten-day festival includes the New Zealand Line
Dancing Championships, the Gold Guitar Queens
contest, a song writing contest, a Mardi Gras and the
International Showcase before culminating in the
Awards night.
Bluff
Oyster and Southland Seafood Festival
Held on Foreshore
Road, Bluff 25th and 26th April 2003.
The Bluff Oyster and
Southland Seafood Festival is an annual event held in
Bluff, showcasing an array of local Southland
seafood, fine wine and entertainment. A vast
selection of fresh, succulent seafood is offered,
allowing everyone a unique taste of Southland.
Entertainment is provided all day and includes bands,
and celebrity appearances. There are plenty of
activities such as the Oyster Opening and Oyster
Eating Competitions, an Oyster Sack Fashion Parade
and a Seafood Chef Cook-Off. The Southern Seas Ball
is held in conjunction with the Festival.
Southland
Festival of Gardens

A celebration of
some of Southland's finest gardens with a variation
of formal to cottage including gardens that
specialise in certain types of flora.
Southland is an
area with a huge diversity of walks, from short walks to multi-day treks.
The walks can either be undertaken unguided or
guided.
