Wanaka township is a popular holiday resort
situated on the south shore of lake Wanaka.
Throughout the year the village is busy with holiday
makers and members of the growing permanent
population.
The region is
primarily a farming area with tourism playing a major
role. In summer the lake offers many recreation
opportunities and in winter skiing is one of the most
popular pastimes.
Activities
include:
Boating. skiing, walking, fishing &
hunting. Visiting puzzle world, a topsy turvy maze
and collection of buildings will test one's sense of
time and spacial awareness.
Every 2nd year at easter, the Warbirds over
Wanaka draws many 1000's of people to witness
the spectacle of old war planes, spitfires,
hurricanes, missersmitt, and other aircraft that have
played a role in worlds history. Even when this event
is not on, you can view most of these planes in the
museum just a few minutes out of town.
For those not used
to vigorous exercise, the short walk up Mt Iron will
get the blood pumping and make your lungs work.
There is a variety
of restaurants and excellent
accommodation.
Wanaka has an small airport, with
charter flights, it is 6 hours drive from
Christchurch via Tekapo, 5 hours from
Dunedin, 1 & 1/2 hours from
Queenstown and about 4 hours from
Invercargill.
