An
hours picturesque drive beyond Queenstown
at the head of lake Wakitipu, and on the edge of Mt Aspiring
National Park, Glenorchy is one of New Zealand's more remote areas,
the last vestige of civilization before heading off into the
wilderness or alpine adventure.
The area has
become a more renowned as many scenes from The movie series, Lord of
The Rings was filmed in the area, and the secret is out about
Paradise, but we are not telling.
A
scenic day trip from Queenstown. On a fine day the drive along the
shore of lake Wakitipu is fantastic, when you do get there,
activities include a jet boat ride up the Dart river, horse riding,
4 wheel driving, visit the Lord of The Rings film scenes, or do some
of the local walks. There are also scenic flights, (fixed wing or
helicopter} to take in alpine panoramas from Aspiring to
Fiordland.
Confident
drivers who can manage gravel roads with fords can drive to the road
ends or take the local 4wd busses to the famous walkways, (Rees, Dart, Routeburn and Greenstone).
Beyond
Glenorchy, there are many places to camp with some public shelters
at roads end with access to
Mt Aspiring
National Park
The village
economy is cantered around agriculture and tourism. There are
several small hotels, cafe's, a camping area and fuel (weekdays
9.00am - 5.00pm).
