Founded primarily by settlers from Scotland
in 1848 by the Lay Association of the Free Church of Scotland. The town's
name comes from Dun Eideann, the Gaelic name for Edinburgh, the Scottish
capital.
Dunedin
is a university city situated by the sea where the University of
Otago, (the oldest university in New Zealand), was founded in Dunedin in
1869.
Activities
and attractions include visiting the Dunedin Botanical Gardens is to
the north of the city which are renowned for the rhododendron
displays in early spring
The cityscape has many
gems of Victorian and Edwardian architecture including Larnach's
Castle, Olveston House, Glenfalloch
Gardens, First Church, and the
magnificent Railway Station. Walk up the world's steepest street
(Baldwin St), visit the infamous Captain Cook tavern, Speight's
brewery and tour the Cadbury chocolate factory.
Visiting the Albatross Colony home to The
most spectacular flying visitor to the Otago
Peninsula is the Royal albatross. This giant bird,
with a wing span of up to 3m and which flies an
estimated 190,000 km per year, lays its single egg at
a colony on Taiaroa Head during November. After
eleven weeks of incubation, the chicks hatch during
late January and early February.
Young birds remain
at the colony until late September, when they leave
the peninsula to travel the oceans before returning
after three to six years to breed. A modern visitor information centre at
Taiaroa Head provides detailed interpretative and
audio-visual displays on these majestic birds as well
another Peninsula wildlife. Nearby is a viewing area
which is open year-round except between 16 September
and 24 November when the birds are mating and laying
eggs.
Close by is the Yellow - Eyed Penguin Reserve, where
you can watch these shy birds returning to nest from the days
fishing.
Other interests are the Taieri Gorge
Railway, Dunedin Public Art Gallery. Otago Settlers
Museum and the Otago Museum.
To the south of
Dunedin is The Catlins. Situated on The Southern Scenic
