New Zealand > Westland > Westport
Westport is set on
the coast where the Buller River, one of New Zealand's largest
rivers meets the sea.
The town was founded
on gold mining and later coal which is still
mined. Westport also has is a large cement factory and agriculture
plays an important part of the local economy with dairying,
beef cattle and sheep farming. .
It is also a fishing port which
is large enough to be served by coastal trading ships and the
occasional cruise liner.
Westport was
infamous for having some 60 hotels on the main
street, now there are only a dozen or so left in the
town and the hotels remain the focal centre of much
social activity.
As a visitor
there is much to do and see from jet boating, rafting
and canoeing on the Buller River, exploring the
historical coal mining sites of Denniston, Stockton
and Millerton. Visiting the Coaltown Museum, the
walkways and seal colonies at Cape Foul wind and
Tauranga Bay.
There are many areas to go bush
walking, hunting and fishing. As a visitor you
can spend days or even weeks exploring this area and
getting to know the locals. We recommend the
Buller Bridge Motel which is only two minutes drive to the town
centre
Chelsea Gateway Motor Lodge situated in the main street.
