> Eastland > Dannevirke
Situated on the
east of the North Island, Danneverke for many
travelers is place to stop and
rest on the trip from Wellington to
Napier & Hastings. The town has a quiet
ambience and of itself is a pleasant place to
linger for a day or two.
State highway 2 passes through the main street and
if you can find a park, a browse of the local
stores can yield surprising rewards for bargain
hunters. For meals and refreshments, The Bank Cafe
has a unique character in addition to excellent
home made goodies and personal service.
A
not to miss attraction for children and lovers of
fantasy is Danneverke's Fantasy Cave which is
filled with characters and scenes from children's
fairy tales including snow white, jack in the bean
stalk and even an octopuses garden. It is
entirely constructed and operated by volunteers
and you will find it on the right in the central
main street as you head north. Mondays are the official
workdays when it may be closed, but in typical volunteer tradition many
hours, often at night are spent working on the project
as it gives great
pleasure to the the young at heart.
Waihi Falls
is a half hour
drive down toward the coast and makes a pleasant
excursion. It is a lovely place for a picnic and the
falls can be viewed from the road end or a 10
minute walk will take you down to the foot of the
falls. A continuation of this excursion is a visit
to Akito Beach, where you can swim and see huge fishing
boats being launched from the beach.
Just a few miles north you will find Norsewood,
home to the well known
Norsewear garment factory
where visitors are welcome to the factory shop
where you will find some of New Zealand's finest
wool fabrics and garments along with light weight
and very warm durable fabrics like blended
opossum, alpaca and merino of which New Zealand is
an industry leader. These new wool blends are not
only warm, but very durable and machine washable.
