Thailand

A jewel in Asia, Thailand is a tropical paradise, with something for everyone. There are great beaches and marine parks ideal for swimming and snorkelling, national forest parks where you can discover the flora and fauna, (take an elephant safari).

The cities are rather crowded and teeming with shopping opportunities and night life.  But in the country there are wide open spaces and fewer people. November to February is the drier, cooler season and considered by westerners, the best time to visit whereas April can be excessively hot and the monsoon arrives in October.

The people are very friendly and hospitable which makes Thailand one of the worlds most popular tourist destinations and in this time of world strife, still a safe place to visit however, do consider the following tips:

  • Petty theft is common in cities and resort areas.
  • Women traveling alone should be extra vigilant.
  • Hotel rooms should be locked and bolted at night.
  • Get an itemized receipt for valuables stored in hotel safes.
  • Only use licensed taxis in Bangkok, they have yellow and black license plates and are considered safe for tourists. Unlicensed taxis have black and white license plates and should be avoided.
  • Be aware that there is occasional violence and banditry in some border areas. The provinces of Pattani, Narathiwat, Songkhla and Yala are considered dangerous and should be avoided. If you must go to these regions, first check with your consulate for updated information.
Thailand Accommodation, from basic to unequalled luxury. As Thailand is a Buddhist country, there are the regions and there are many festivals. When visiting monasteries, it is respectful that women wear a long skirt and top, men wear trousers and shirt.

Getting there:
Bangkok is the most popular destination with has two international airports, however there are overland routes from Malaysia, Laos and Cambodia and the train from Singapore to Bangkok takes a leisurely 48 hours with an afternoon in Kuala Lumpur and a morning in Penang. Note there is no such thing as a 'Singapore to Bangkok ticket', you must buy a separate ticket for each individual train journey you make and its cheaper to buy northbound tickets in Malaysia than Singapore.
