Australia - Victoria
Victoria
occupies the south eastern portion of
Australia and has a great variety of places
to interest from the
cosmopolitan and diverse city life of
Melbourne (the state capital), to the gold
field towns of Ballarat and Bendigo, wine
growing regions of Mildura,
Rutherglen, Milawa and Glenrowan, the wetlands and lake regions of Central Gippsland to high country of the Dandenongs
and the east and south coast beaches.
Then there
is the breathtaking beauty of the Grampians
(of interest to bush walkers), which have
been around for over four hundred million
years. You will find sheer cliffs, dense
forests and crystal clear lakes, these ranges
are truly spectacular. (Did you see the film,
"The Man From Snowy River?)
The
streams fed by these waters wander their
course amid forests of towering red gums,
sheoke and black wattles. These forests are
home to a variety of wildlife, the most
common of which are the koalas, wallabies,
kangaroos and emus. as well as a great number
of exquisite native birds.
For a
relaxing experience you can hire a house boat
and follow The Murray River which is one of
the largest regional features. It acts as the
natual border between Victoria and New South
Wales and in it's 2600 km course from its
rising in the eastern mountains, flows
through the wine regions of Mildura and on
through to the sea at Encounter Bay in South
Australia.
The
Grampians are one of the largest National
Parks in Victoria with other parks at Donna
Buang, Kinglake. All parks are protected by
Park Rangers who welcome visitors, advise
them where to go and what to watch out for
and how to have the best time. The largest remaining
cool and warm temperate rainforests are found
in East Gippsland, the Rainforest Capital of
Victoria.
For the health
conscious, the Macedon Ranges which are
famous for beautiful homes, forests,
gardens and the resort Spas of which the
quality and diversity of the mineral waters
is equal to the best anywhere in the world.
For those traveling between Meblourne and Adelaide,
Casterton is a popular overnight stop-over for tourists. The
town is centrally located for day trips to the Great Ocean
Road, Grampians, Wimmera and Coonawarra regions.
