Fraser Island world heritage
area and national park is located just off the South Queensland coast and
is separated from mainland Australia by a narrow channel. It is
the largest sand island on Earth with great ecological
significance. The island is 120km long with an area of
165,280ha and features include long white beaches, coloured
sand cliffs, rocky
headlands and even a shipwreck.
There is abundant wildlife and a
crystal clear fresh water lakes for swimming. While the ocean is great for
fishing and sailing, there are many sharks which make swimming unsafe. Humpback
whales frequent the area from August to mid November and are best seen from one of
the many tours or scenic flights which operate from Hervey Bay or Fraser Island.
Whale watch tours and ranger guided tours of the island operate from Kingfisher Bay Resort.
There are no roads on the island and the
beach serves as a highway and airport. All vehicles must be 4wd and driving
on the beach takes considerable skill. If you
plan on driving, read the
driving on sand PDF, you will need
Adobe's PDF Reader.
To get there, commercial tours of the island operate from Rainbow Beach, the Sunshine
Coast, Hervey Bay and Brisbane and a passenger ferry operates from Urangan
Boat Harbour to Kingfisher Bay. To drive take the highway from Noosa to Maryborough and Urangan
Boat Harbour. Boat owners can moor at Kingfisher Bay Resort, Wathumba and Garry’s
Anchorage.
