Australia > Northern Territory > Darwin
Darwin is the State Capital of
the Northern Territory where the
lifestyle of the 105,000 residents is relaxed and the
city is lush and green with palms and frangipani.
Darwin is a modern bustling city with plenty of
attractions and entertainment from nightclubs and
theatres, with a casino, shopping complexes,
restaurants, fabulous multicultural markets and
international standard sporting facilities.
The city was totally rebuilt
after it's destruction by Cyclone Tracey in 1974.
Darwin is
approximately 4050km from Sydney, 3500km from
Brisbane, 3200km from Adelaide, 4500km from Perth and
1480km from Alice Springs.
The climate is
tropical with daytime temperatures between 29-33 ºC
(84ºF - 91ºF) and at night 20-26 ºC (68 ºF - 79
ºF) year round and a rainfall of 1700 mm.
The population is varied with
white and Indigenous Australians, many Asians and tourist from all over.
With just over a 100,000 residents Darwin may be the most multicultural city
in Australia. Darwin for travellers is a good arrival point from Asia, cars
are often cheap as travellers buy cars in other centers, drive to Darwin and
try to sell them before leaving the country.
Remember the ocean is to
dangerous for swimming due to the huge salt water crocodiles and/or poison
jellyfish except at Nightcliff Beach where there's a stinger net protecting part of
the beach and Casuarina Beach which is one of Darwin's best
beaches with a section about 500 metres long is designated as legal
nude area. The legal nude bathing section is clearly signposted.
While your
there, check out the Mindil Beach Night Market where you can sit under the
palms with local families and sample great food from the many stalls.
