A tour of
Australia is not complete without visiting the
Australian Capital Territory and Canberra which is the modern,
purpose built capital city of Australia. It was
planned by Walter Burley Griffin a renowned American
architect, and feature spacious wide avenues, open
parklands with views over Lake Burley Griffin.
Canberra is located just four hours south west of
Sydney and is two hours drive from Batemans Bay on
the NSW South
Coast.
The central area
of Canberra, includes the "Parliamentary
Triangle" with the major attractions being
Parliament House on
Capital Hill. The Parliament House tour is
very informative and the building showcases
Australian timbers, arts and crafts within an
impressive marble and granite structure. It takes 1/2
a day just to see the highlights and there is also
National Portrait Gallery, National Library, National
Museum, Science Centre and the National Capital
exhibition.
You will
also find an interesting
variety of creative architecture in the diplomatic
part of the city. Then
there is The Australian War Memorial, regarded as one
of the worlds best war museums and for a wider
perspective go up the Telstra Tower for a great view
of the cityscape. Visit the botanic gardens and bird
walk atrium where you can walk amongst some 500 bird
species and take a stroll in the giant Namadgi
National Park..
Canberra has an excellent range of amenities and
services with over
300 restaurants, boutique wineries and markets in the
Old Bus Depot in Kingston.
