Australian slang can be very confusing for visitors, here are some common terms you may encounter.

Aust - Auzz - Oz = Australia
Aussie - Auzzi - Ozzi = Australian
Ankle biter = A young child
Aussie rules = Football (Australian code)
Arvo = Afternoon
Battler =Fighter
BBQ - barbie = Barbarbaque (not to be confused with the doll)
Beanie = Woolly hat / fitted hat worn in cold
Bell = (give someone a ~) Ring / telephone /call someone
Billabong = Pond / water hole
Billy = Metal can / tin for boiling water over campfire
Bloke = man
Bludger = Scrounger; one who lives off others
Bonnet = Car's engine hood
Boot = Car's trunk
Bowser = Petrol pump
Breakfast = Brekkie
Bush = The countryside
Bushbashing = Travel through the bush
Brew = stop for a brew - a beer or tea break
Brollie = Umbrella
Chunder = Vomit / to be sick
Cobber = Friend / mate
Cozzy / cossie = Swimming trunks/ bathing costume
Crissie = Christmas
Digger = Australian soldier
Don't come the raw prawn = You can't fool me/ don't try to fool me
Dunny = toilet
Emu parade = Have a Clean-up
Esky = Portable ice box / ice chest
Fottie = Football Aussie style
Galah / dill = A bird, or act silly like a galah
Garbo = Dustman, dustbin
Gizza = give me
Grouse = Great / excellent
Hump/Humping = act of having sex
Jackeroo / Jackaroo = Male pupil on sheep / young male working on a station
Jillaroo = Female pupil on sheep / young female working on a station
Little Nipper =A young child
Lollies = Candy or sweets
Middie = Beer glass / glass measure
Mozzie = Mosquito
No worries = That's all right, no problem
One pot screamer = Weak-headed/someone who can't hold drink
Pokie = Gambling machine
Prang - Bump / crash / knock (especially cars)
Pub = A public bar
Rapt = (in something) Keen on something / like someone
Rellie = Relative
Roo = Kangaroo
Have a root = have sex, a very base term
Schooner =A larger measure of beer
Scungy = Dirty, untidy
Semi =(trailer) Articulated lorry / trailer unit
Shag = have sex
She'll be right = Everything will be alright
Shocker = A disaster or disappointment; a shocking person.
Smoke-o(h) / smoko = Tea-break / morning break
Smokes = Fags / cigarettes
Snags = Sausages
Sod off = go away
Solicitor = beggar
Strides = Men's trousers / men's pants
Sunnies = Sunglasses
Swag = Bundle of belongings / sleeping gear
Tassie = Tasmania
Tellie = Television
Thongs = Flip-flops / jandles in NZ - slip on shoes with a strap between the big an first toe
Tinnie / tinny = Can of beer>
Tucker = Food
Vegemite = A yeast extract similar to marmite in the UK
Walkabout = To wander about nomadically
Yakka = Work (derived form an Aboriginal word)
