Fire
Year around one has to be mindful of fire and careful in the bush not to
cause one. Combined with a hot dry climate, Eucalyptus trees produce a
vapor, a substance similar to ether that is very flammable,
and given the slightest chance, the bush bursts into flames.
You will more
than likely hear stories of the fire season - it is not a disaster, simply
the way the land works here - after burning the land regenerates, the ash
providing nutrients to the new plants. It is unfortunate that peoples homes
are destroyed occasionally and sometimes people die, but normally they are
prepared and back burning occurs to minimise risks. A burnt leaf floating
down on top of you or ash covering all available spaces happens sometimes,
depending how close you are to the fires.
