The
town of Oxford is at the edge of the Canterbury foot hills, about an hours
drive from Christchurch. The town has a petrol station, store, cafe and
craft outlet. It makes for a pleasant day trip from Christchurch and there
are many picnic and walking areas.
Rhyde Falls & Mt.
Oxford walkway
From Oxford drive west and follow the signs to
Coopers Creek. Rhyde falls is (signposted) a
pleasant 3 - 5 hour return walk through some
farmland and beech forest. The Mt Oxford at 1364
metres is a moderately challenging day trip for
those of average fitness.
Ashley Gorge
Is a popular picnic and camping area accessed from
the Oxford - Rangiora road.
Mt Richards
Is accessed from the Oxford - Rangiora road.
Turn off at Glentui and at the road end there is a
picnic area with some marked short nature walks and
waterfall views. The top of the Mt Richards
(1047m), takes 4-6 hours return and can be done as a
circuit returning to the car park. Mt. Richmond is
rewarding
for the views and the natural forest and bird life.
The Waimakariri Gorge
Is a popular picnic and jet-boating area between
Oxford and Springfield on the
Arthur's Pass highway.
Lees
Valley
Also off the
Oxford - Rangiora road the Lees Valley is a rural
farming area with access to walking trails and 4WD
enthusiasts can take a circuit route crossing the
Ashley river to Whiterock or North Loburn.
