The Mackenzie
Country In the heart of New Zealand's South Island, it is
a vast alluvial grassland basin sheltered by the
mountains of The Southern Alps in the west and the Two Thumb Range to
the east. The region has higher than average
sunshine hours and a low rainfall. The warm and welcoming spirit of this
small region will make your visit a very enjoyable
experience.
There are several large lakes including
Pukaki, Tekapo, Poako, Ruataniwha and others which
are fed by snow and glacial melt waters. The lakes
are connected by a series of canals which serve to
control water flows for hydro electricity and they now
also serve as an excellent resource for salmon
farming and fishing.
This region offers a wide range of year
around outdoor activities including, hiking, mountain
climbing, biking, boating,
kayaking,
skiing (both down hill and cross country),
horse trekking,
fishing,
hunting scenic flights,
and more with
accommodation in Tekapo, Twizel and
Mt
Cook.
Tekapo
The township of Tekapo
situated on the south shore of Lake
Tekapo provides a range of
excellent accommodation for all budgets, with cafe's
and restaurants featuring Japanese, Asian, European
and local cuisine. there is a supermarket, petrol and
a range of small shops.
Twizel:
Formerly part of Ruataniwha Station, Twizel was
built to house workers and service the Upper Waitaki
Power Scheme over the eighteen years of construction
(1968-1986). It was to be demolished on the projects
completion, however after a battle with beaurocracy,
the town was incorporated into the district and the
residents were able to purchase their properties.
Today Twizel is a
busy service and tourist town with a residential
population of approximately 1200 people. In summer,
and school holidays, the population can increase
three fold. You will find
excellent self-contained accommodation at
Mountain Chalets (pictured) with cafe's and restaurants in the
village.
Both
Tekapo and Twizel provide access to
Mt
Cook.

you want to experience some of New Zealand's most
