New Zealand > Canterbury > The Mackenzie Country

The Mackenzie Country In the heart of New Zealand's South Island, it is a vast alluvial grassland basin sheltered by the mountains of The Southern Alps in the west and the Two Thumb Range to the east. The region has higher than average sunshine hours and a low rainfall. The warm and welcoming spirit of this small region will make your visit a very enjoyable experience.

There are several large lakes including Pukaki, Tekapo, Poako, Ruataniwha and others which are fed by snow and glacial melt waters. The lakes are connected by a series of canals which serve to control water flows for hydro electricity and they now also serve as an excellent resource for salmon farming and fishing.

This region offers a wide range of year around outdoor activities including, hiking, mountain climbing, biking, boating, kayaking, skiing (both down hill and cross country), horse trekking, fishing, hunting scenic flights, and more with accommodation in Tekapo, Twizel and Mt Cook.

Tekapo
The township of Tekapo
situated on the south shore of Lake Tekapo provides a range of excellent accommodation for all budgets, with cafe's and restaurants featuring Japanese, Asian, European and local cuisine. there is a supermarket, petrol and a range of small shops.

Twizel:
Formerly part of Ruataniwha Station, Twizel was built to house workers and service the Upper Waitaki Power Scheme over the eighteen years of construction (1968-1986). It was to be demolished on the projects completion, however after a battle with beaurocracy, the town was incorporated into the district and the residents were able to purchase their properties.

Today Twizel is a busy service and tourist town with a residential population of approximately 1200 people. In summer, and school holidays, the population can increase three fold. You will find excellent self-contained accommodation at Mountain Chalets (pictured) with cafe's and restaurants in the village.

Both Tekapo and Twizel provide access to Mt Cook.

So when you want to experience some of New Zealand's most dramatic scenery, book your stay in the Mackenzie Country.
