Situated in the
Hurunui District, North Canterbury, Lake Taylor
is a small picturesque lake to the south of Lake Sumner forest park and is
popular retreat for camping, canoeing, fishing, mountain biking and off road
vehicles. This remote recreation area has no
facilities other than a long drop toilet by the car park, and the
area is exposed to the very strong north
west winds.
A visit to
Lake Taylor is an excellent day trip for families to picnic or camp
and enjoy activities on the lake and explore the walkways. The lake is
suitable for canoes with good fishing and swimming for the hardy.
The
most popular camping spot is at the car park at the eastern side of
the lake. When it's to windy, a more sheltered camp site is found
about 6km back down the Lake Sumner road by the Sisters Stream.
There are many walks
with access to Lake Sumner and the Waiou river with walking trails into
high mountains and over to Westland. There is 4WD access to Lake
Sumner and drivers must book and acquire a key from the
DOC Christchurch office.
Getting there:
From Christchurch, drive north on SH1 to
Waipara, where you turn left
onto SH7 and continue to Waikari
where you turn left and travel through Hawarden, past Horsley Down
and into the hills. Once you cross Jacks river, you leave the
bitumen and drive on a narrow gravel road which winds over Jacks
Saddle and then follows up the Hurunui River and on to Lake Taylor.
There are many fords on this road which may carry water during or
after rain.
