Situated in
a high country basin 385 m above sea level, Hanmer is a thermal
resort town in the Hurunui district 90 minutes drive north of Christchurch
and well serviced by bus.
The thermal pool complex has recently been
upgraded (2004) and you can relax in one of the many pools. Most are just
chlorinated fresh water with some minerals added back in, with 3 small real
pools with lightly treated natural thermal water. For the children, there
are play pools and a waterslide.
Admission
is from $12.00 and you can be there for the whole day. The complex also
has a beauty therapy/massage service. For children there are cooler pools and a waterside.
Complex usually closes by 9.00 pm.
For
the adventurous, try jet boating and rafting on the Amuri
River, bungy jumping, skiing at the nearby Amuri Ski Field, or go
four wheel driving over the many trails through
the hills where you will find snowy alpine passes and challenging
riverbeds.
For mountain bike enthusiasts, there are many trails with on and off
road areas to explore.
Other activities are fishing,
walking, golf & mini golf, scenic flights, quad bike hire and around the town are many exotic forests where you
will find delightful easy seasonal walkways.
In summer
it can be very hot and dry, in autumn, splendid colours with wild
blackberries, in winter, bare branches, sometimes snow or frosts,
and in spring, the green of new buds and leaves.
A perfect day in Hanmer may be a stroll up conical
hill before breakfast, followed by an adventure, then lunch and a soak in
the pools before dining in one of the many restaurants.
(The Conical Hill walk can be done in an hour).
There is a wide range of
accommodation from backpackers upward. We recommend the
Heritage Hotel which provides comfort in it's cozy
rooms, and self contained chalet's.
