Sumner
Sumner is a suburb of
Christchurch, well serviced
by local city busses and 15 - 20
minutes drive from the central city.
All year round, this is
a popular recreation area with a
sealed esplanade walkway for people
of all ages and capabilities, with a
safe swimming beach and numerous rock
pools for small children to explore.
The beach is popular for board
surfing and there is selection of
Cafe's, ice-cream shops and a movie
theatre.
Taylor's
Mistake is a popular surfing
beach and despite being very close to Christchurch, has a remote
feel. From here several paths lead
out to Godley Head, the peninsula
which is the northern side to the
entrance of Lyttleton harbour.
For the more
adventurous walker, you can walk or
drive to Taylor's Mistake, the next
beach beyond Sumner and the end of
the road. This walkway leads to
Godley Head and the old
fortifications built in the world
wars. On the Southern side, a path
leads down past the old world war 2
relics and a tunnel which provides
good views of seabird colonies and
Lyttleton harbour, a major port and
recreation area.
There are many other
walks and drives around the Port
Hills which are popular for rock
climbing, mountain biking, hang
gliding, walking and gliding..
From Sumner, a highway
continues to Lyttleton and around the
harbour to Governors Bay and
Diamond Harbour |
