> Getting About
Christchurch is flat and the central city streets form a grid
making navigation easy, though the one way streets can be confusing. The
city is ten - fifteen minutes from the airport and is well serviced by
shuttle busses, taxis and rental cars.
Cathedral Square is the city centre, public transport hub and main
shopping area. map
A
good way to start exploring the city is to take the free yellow bus which
runs between town hall and the old railway station, or the city tram which
runs from the square past the art gallery, markets, museum and loops back to
the square. Guided walks depart from a kiosk over the street from the 'big
ice cream cone'.
Hiring a bicycle is a good way to explore the city centre and Hagley Park
and some hotels
have cycles for guests. Note the roads are dangerous but there are cycleways.
Other options are taking a red bus to The Sign of The Takehe, Sumner or the
suburban malls or one of the many tour busses from the square or your hotel,
and for luxury, limousines can be hired.
