Akaroa
is a thriving tourist town where French
settlers first displaced the local Maori and today it
retains a slightly French flavour with streets and
some places retaining the French names.
It is the oldest
town in Canterbury surrounded
by the volcanic hills of Banks Peninsula
and claims to
have been the site of the first New Zealand vineyard,
first Catholic Church and first residential Hotel
(The Bruce 1842)
The timeless relaxed atmosphere
makes it a popular place for honeymoons and romance.
There are safe sandy beaches, rock pools, walkways, a
golf course and mini golf, tennis courts, boat &
canoe hire, nature cruises, dolphin swims and many
places to explore.
Here you can walk
the hills, hire a kayak and explore the bays. Visit
French
Settlement, Museum, Historic houses, Okains Bay
Museum - renowned for its Maori collection, Onuku
Marae, a fully carved Maori meeting house.
You will find a range of restaurants,
café's, and wineries,
several craft shops including crystals
and semi precious stones.
Akaroa is a
pleasant place for a quiet few days or an enjoyable
day excursion from Christchurch.
