> Agriculture
Agriculture in New
Zealand is the largest primary industry. Following the second world
war, New Zealand was the food basket for Europe. Today
agriculture is developing in two directions, one technological, the
other organic and natural. While debate continues as to which system
is best, both systems are developing rapidly.
In techno farming, there
is artificial insemination, heavy fertilizer use, heavy pesticide
use with some accidental releases of imported genetically modified
organisms.
With organic farming,
the natural order is maintained and there are no synthetic chemicals
used. The world market for organic foods is growing rapidly as the
only sustainable way to eat for optimal health.
New Zealand began
exporting frozen produce way back before 1900 when refrigerated
shipping was first developed. Today with modern shipping methods,
many foods are prepared ready for eating, or ready to cook.
As you travel the New
Zealand countryside, there are vast expanses of farmland with
sheep cattle, deer, goats, alpacas, llamas, emus, ostriches and many
exotic species of animals and fish.
