New Zealand > Accommodation
As a visitor, you will find that there are many choices in places to stay for holiday of
business.
Hotels:
There are a wide range of first class
hotels
and luxury resorts in
most cities and regions. Planning your trip and
booking ahead is required. Hotels are of international standards and
rated from 3 to 6 star. Browse and the hotel links will open in a
new window. preview hotels
Motels:
For the more
casual traveller, there is a wide range of motels in
which the standards and prices vary greatly.
The traditional Kiwi motel will have a range
of self contained units with a refrigerator and
cooking facilities, pots & pans sufficient to
prepare family meals. However many of the newer
motels may only have a toaster and minimal tea and
coffee making facilities with tea and coffee, (most
motels provide fresh milk sufficient for tea/coffee
on your arrival).
Most motels will have a range of sleeping options
with one double bed and one single bed the most
common arrangement with an extra fold out bed in
some. preview motels
Availability
In the off peak seasons, you can often drive into a town and
select a motel, in peak season, especially over and school holidays
and in summer and winter in the resorts like
Queenstown advance bookings are
advised.
The cheapest motel I have stayed was in
Karamea @ $15.00/night while prices in the main
centres can top $200.00/pn. Over the country as an
average you are looking at around $80.00-$120.00/pn
per unit which may sleep 1 - 4 people.
Other features are a pay to use telephone, and some
motels will allow you dial up internet access, but
not all.
Pay to use laundry.

Backpackers
& Hostels:
Backpackers lodges have become very popular
and you will find them in all cities, most towns and
some remote places. Prices range from about $15.00p/n
in dorms to $75.00p/n twin share. Have communal
kitchen/bathroom facilities.
The Youth Hostels Association have hostels in the
main cities and there are some women's hostels.
For the single traveller, this is a great way to meet
people and even find others to share your journey.
Homestays
Another popular accommodation option where
you get to stay with real kiwi families, share meals
and stories. Advance bookings are nearly always
required and prices vary greatly.
Farmstay
if you are interested in agriculture and
want a close up view of farming, this is a good
option. Most farmers will include a farm tour and
many will introduce you to farming activities. Prices
vary greatly.
Campgrounds
Will often have a range of options from tent
sites, motorhome/caravan parks, cabins & motel
units with reasonable to very good amenities,
communal kitchens, shower blocks and laundry
facilities.
Prices range from around $10.00pp for tent sites to
motel prices for units.
Freedom
Camping
Get into nature, pack your
tent and you will find many great campsites where you can wake with
the sunrise and bird song.
Campers are catered for in our national parks and
some forest reserves. Popular camping areas will have
toilets and drinking water, some will not. Note that
all stream water must be boiled/treated before
drinking.
Motorhomes/Caravans
This is a popular way to see NZ and when
travelling, you can encounter convoys of motor homes.
You will find that there are many "no
camping" signs near small towns which it is very
courteous to observe these as previous visitors have
spoiled the welcome by dumping waste or making other
trouble.
There are many motor home facilities found in camping
grounds where you can plug into mains power, top up
with drinking water and empty toilet waste, (also
some petrol stations allow the latter).
You can stay in health
retreat centres to
regain health and sense of self.
