geologically a very young country and in many places
there is volcanic activity. Part of this natural
resource is in the form of hot mineral springs which
well naturally from deep under the ground. They are
very therapeutic and provide the opportunity to relax
and do nothing.
South Island
Hanmer Thermal Complex
Is in the centre of the Alpine Village of Hanmer Springs a thermal
Reserve and an all year
round holiday destination offering a variety of
outdoor activities situated a leisurely 90 minutes drive
north of Christchurch, the major gateway to the South
Island of New Zealand.
The Hanmer Springs Thermal Reserve
has outdoor seven outdoor thermal pools, a
freshwater lane swimming pool, a freshwater pool and
waterslide for children. Also on site are four
private thermal pools and Scandinavian sauna / steam
facilities complete with their own shower and plunge
pool.
All thermal pools are a variety of
temperatures ranging from approximately 35 to 40
degree Celsius. The natural thermal waters contain a
wide variety of minerals including sulphur, sodium
chloride, calcium, Carbonates, magnesium, potassium
and others. Some pools the water is filtered and
minerals added back in, as the water colour varies in
the totally natural pools.
Caution; jewellery will discolour if worn in the waters and picnic areas are provided for those who
wish bring their lunch and spend the day.

Set in the bush
clad mountains of the Southern Alps Maruia is one of
the most natural thermal pool complexes. It has two
segregated bathhouses and several smaller outdoor pools.
During the day sandflies can be a bother although
they are less in the bathhouses. Climate wise, you
may experience every extreme from balmy summer to
snow or torrential rain. The pools are best in the
evenings.
North Island
Te Arawa is a small town near
Hamilton which
has a small hot soda spa pool with a larger play
& swim pool for children.
Polynesian Spa
is an historical hot mineral springs spa, situated five minutes walk
from
Rotorua’s
central business district, and overlooks Sulphur Bay on Lake Rotorua. It offers 35 hot mineral pools including
