New Zealand > About NZ > Public Toilets
When nature calls,
what can you expect from the New Zealand public
toilet?
Pictured here is a classical long drop (Arthurs Pass
National Park) which in the middle of nowhere is the
basic comfort and you need to have your own t-paper.
As the population has
grown and tourism developed, city councils do
provide for the comfort of shoppers, and travellers.
Amenities range widely in quality and cleanliness
with a trend toward automated units where once you
finish, the unit self cleans and there have been
problems where they have worked on timers where the
door opened prematurely, or the slow customer
received an unexpected complementary shower..
For the traveller,
petrol stations allow those purchasing to take
comfort, some unfortunately are not so clean.
City shopping malls
generally have modern clean units, as do restaurants
like McDonalds and KFC. For the explorer in
wilderness regions, pack some t-paper and a spade.
