Hunting and Fishing in New Zealand
New Zealand has a wide variety of fish and game. There are broadbill
(swordfish) and many other game fish, stages, chamois and thar for the
hunter and in most regions there are specialist hunting lodges with hunting
and fishing guide services.
Permits to hunt and fish are required and the Department of Conservation offices provide hunting permits for people
wanting to hunt on public conservation land. This way hunters are informed
of any pest control operations happening in the area they are hunting and
the Department can keep track of how many people are hunting in each area
for safety reasons.
Hunting permits can be obtained from your local
Department of
Conservation office.
The Department of Conservation is responsible for management of the trout
fishery in the Taupo District. To fish for trout at Taupo, you are required
to have a Department of Conservation Taupo District fishing licence. br>
However a separate organisation,
Fish and Game New Zealand, have
responsibility for trout and salmon sports fisheries for the rest of New
Zealand and for game bird management.
Licenses are required for trout and salmon fishing and for hunting game
birds, such as ducks, geese and pheasants.
Fish and Game New Zealand can provide useful information about hunting
and angling regulations, access and codes of conduct.
Please note that
didymo, or
‘rock snot’, algae is prevalent in many NZ rivers and lakes which requires
that when fishing, your equipment must be sterilised before moving to a new
location,
more.
