About > Climate
New Zealand has a temperate climate. Summer daytime temperatures
vary from 10 - 25 degrees in the south and 15 - 30 in the north.
Then again there are odd occasions where for example, Dunedin has
had snow in December or the day time temperature may climb to 40º in
some areas.
As New Zealand in
an island nation set in the Southern Oceans, the
weather can be very unpredictable - three seasons in
one day... You need to have a couple of winter items
in summer and some light clothing for winter in
addition to the season 'norm'. If you are heading
into the mountains, hiking, it is essential to take
all weather survival gear in all seasons.
With the
deterioration in the ozone layer over the region, U.V
radiation is particularly strong and sunburn can
easily happen is a short space of time, so much so
that in summer, burn times are broadcast on the
weather news.
Temperatures are
measured in Celsius and range from below 0° in
winter to + 30° in summer and the seasons are:
Summer:
December - January - February
Warm over most of the country with day time
temperatures from the low teens to over 30°
Autumn: March - April
Winter: May- June - July - August
Spring: September
- October - November

There are many regional variations:
Canterbury in summer often experiences very strong and dry north
west winds called the nor'wester, which causes irritation to people
and sucks moisture from the land, while less than a 100km
away, Westland may be experiencing torrential rain.
