New Zealand > About > Backpacking
In new Zealand the term backpackers once referred to hitch hikers who
traveled with their possessions in a backpack
on a minimal budget, whereas now it can anyone traveling on a
minimal budget and the modern backpacker will often hire a car or van, or
take a backpackers tour bus.
In the 60's - 80's was very popular and there would often be
many people seen hitching daily. Today with the increase in
crimes against hitchhikers and the improvement in other transport,
hitchhiking is less common and many hitchhikers are NZ students getting home
after term.
Throughout New Zealand you will
find many backpackers and places with budget accommodation. They may be private homes, older hotels or
purpose built. Standard and levels of service vary. Prices
range from around NZ$15.00 per person per night to
around $50.00. Most will have shared facilities and
from 2 - 20 people per room.
Due to the increase in crime and the expansion of our cities, we recommend that single women avoid hitch hiking alone.
