About > Antarctica
New Zealand is the
gateway to Antarctica, the frozen
continent. Christchurch airport is the take off
and landing point for the huge long range aircraft
which take people and supplies to and from the ice.
Much of the equipment used on the ice is also
serviced here in Christchurch.
The International
Antarctic Centre and winner of the New Zealand
Tourism Awards "best visitor attraction",
It was designed to
give you 'first hand' experience of the Great White
Continent.
The Centre
features a magnificent large multi screen
audio-visual, 'experimental' exhibits, live displays
and Antarctic play areas all designed to make you
feel like you're actually there. Especially the
"Snow and Ice Experience", a 200 sq. m room
filled with 40 ton's of real snow and ice. Here you
can build snowmen, explore a snow cave, even slide
downhill in this freezing sub-zero environment.
There is also a comprehensive education program using the latest
technology to make hands-on activities fun and suitable for all
ages. It's a great experience for speakers of all languages with
multi-lingual systems available also. Afterwards you can 'Chill-out'
in the 60 degrees South Café and Bar, or shop in the world's largest
array of Antarctic theme products. While in Auckland you can get
some Antarctic experience at Kelly Tarlton's
Antarctic Encounter & Underwater World
